IFWEA MONTHLY BULLETIN

May 2004

Dear Friends

Welcome to IFWEA’s May Bulletin. Many thanks for the many positive messages received in response to the Bulletin. Please keep us informed with news and information that you wish to see included in future issues.

October Euro-WEA and IFWEA Events, Eastbourne, UK.

The 2004 Conference of Euro-WEA (the European regional organisation of IFWEA) will be held in Eastbourne, on England’s south coast, on Monday 11 October. The conference will be preceded by two days of debate and discussion, including IFWEA’s seminar on Organising in the Global Economy (following up on the successful Manchester seminar held in July 2002), and a Euro-WEA discussion on the future of workers’ education in Europe. The IFWEA Executive Committee will meet on Monday and Tuesday 10/11 October.

All IFWEA affiliates are invited to participate, but would have to cover their own travel and accommodation costs. Accommodation, including all meals, will cost £74.00 (approx. € 120) per 24 hours.

The events will be held at the Transport & General Workers’ Union Centre (http://www.tgwu.org.uk/Templates/Internal.asp?NodeID=89291), located on Eastbourne’s sea front. Eastbourne is approximately one hour’s train journey from London, and 40 minutes by train direct from London’s Gatwick Airport.

George Meany Center Accreditation

The George Meany Center for Labor Studies-The National Labor College has been awarded accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The rigorous accreditation process began for the college in 1999. It is widely recognized as a barometer of quality in higher education. Details available from http://www.georgemeany.org . It is hoped that GMC’s new status will open new opportunities for IFWEA accredited education programmes in the future.

International Labour Conference

As mentioned in previous bulletins, IFWEA will be represented at the forthcoming International Labour Conference, in Geneva from 31 May. Affiliates are reminded to contact anne.webley@ifwea.org should they wish to join the IFWEA delegation. IFWEA is unfortunately unable to offer help with travel or accommodation costs.

Affiliation Fees

Many thanks to all those affiliates who have paid affiliation fees for 2004. As you know, our budgets are extremely tight, and we rely on prompt payment. If you still have fees outstanding, please arrange payment as soon as possible.
