IFWEA MONTHLY BULLETIN

July-August  2004

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the July / August IFWEA Bulletin – covering the European holiday period. Please note that the IFWEA Secretariat will be closed for annual holidays for 9-27 August.

October Conference & Seminar, UK

IFWEA / Euro-WEA seminars, along with the constitutional Biennial conference of Euro-WEA will be held at the residential centre of the Transport & General Workers’ Union in Eastbourne on October 9-10, followed by a meeting of the IFWEA Executive Committee. The event is attracting considerable interest, and we have managed to secure a very promising line-up of speakers on a range of topics of interest to IFWEA and Euro-WEA affiliates. It will also be launching the new ‘Global Champions’ project of the UK’s General Federation of Trade Unions.

For full details of the event, including the up-to-date programme, see [BROCHURE.pdf]. If you have not already done so, please register to attend – see [REGISTRATION FORM.pdf].

UNESCO International Conference on Education

UNESCO is holding its 47th session of the International Conference on Education on 8-11 September 2004 in Geneva, to which IFWEA is invited to send representatives. The conference theme this year is “Quality Education for All Young People: Challenges, Trends and Priorities”. For more details see http://www.ibe.unesco.org/International/ICE47/english/index_ICE47.htm.  If you wish to attend, please contact anne.webley@ifwea.org  or phone the Secretariat as soon as possible to arrange your registration. Please note that IFWEA participants will have to cover their full costs of travel and accommodation.

Core Labour Standards for Poverty Reduction

IFWEA affiliates are invited to attend an international seminar jointly hosted by SOLIDAR and the Olof Palme International Centre on ”Core Labour Standards For Poverty Reduction”. The seminar will take place on Wednesday 8 September 14h – 18h at the Kashmir Centre, Avenue des Arts 57, 1000 Brussels. The seminar aims to raise awareness of the issue of labour standards and specifically to develop understanding among participants that without labour standards, workers can be trapped in a cycle of poverty. Speakers will include: Danuta Hübner (European Commissioner for Trade) (tbc) and representatives from the ILO, Olof Palme International Centre, ICFTU, Swedish Development Ministry, Global Network, European Parliament, European Commission and Global Progressive Forum. If you would like to attend please contact suzy@solidar.org  before 27 August.

IFWEA at European Social Forum

IFWEA’s education work with the Transport & General Workers’ Union and the Global Union Federations on trade unions and globalisation will be under discussion at the forthcoming European Social Forum, being held in London on 14-17 October. Details available at http://www.fse-esf.org. If you wish to participate in these discussions, please contact the Secretariat.
