IFWEA MONTHLY BULLETIN

March  2005

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the March edition of the IFWEA Bulletin.

DFID supports new IFWEA Africa informal economy project

The British Government’s Department for International Development (DFID) has agreed financial support for a new IFWEA project in Africa, developing workers’ education programmes to strengthen workers’ organisation in the informal economy. The three-year project, to be managed by Zambia-based Mike Chungu (mikechungu@yahoo.com) , IFWEA’s regional co-ordinator, will include national programmes in four countries, regional training and consultation events, and the development of new education material for use in informal economy work.

Palestinian IFWEA member facing threat of repression

IFWEA member Democracy & Workers’ Rights Center (DWRC) in Palestine is calling for trade unions and workers’ organisations to condemn an attempt by the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions to enlist the support of Palestinian security services to take repressive measures against the Independent Workers’ Committees Federation and DWRC itself. For details, see [DWRC_appeal_eng.rtf] (English) or [DWRC_appeal_fr.rtf] (French), or contact info@dwrc.org.

IFWEA Executive Committee

The next meeting of the IFWEA Executive Committee will be held in Lisbon, Portugal on May 14-15, and substantial time will be set aside for a major discussion on strategy in the coming years. Topics will include IFWEA’s regional development, relationships with the international trade union federations, IFWEA services and support to member organisations, and co-operation with Solidar and other international bodies. Should member organisations wish to contribute to the discussion, or place any other item on the agenda, please contact dave.spooner@ifwea.org.
