Summary of Session 4

Study Circle EST1 (Tiia Kask)

Hello everybody!

At first we would like to thank all of study circles for the reports. Well done!

In the fourth session our study circle studied all of the reports and we are glad that all study circles contributed the interesting points of view and new ideas about the topic for development our international discussion. We are completely agree with comrades from S. Africa to be open and to communicate straight to each other.

Now we would like to share our opinion and also to continue the discussion about global competition.

About the global competition (GC) our study circle stayed on the position that GC is inevitable phenomenon in the development of economy. Concerning of that the group membres have the opinion that we have to know more about the situation in other countries and to exchange the information continually. Therefore it is very useful and interesting to participate in the present ISC activities.

During the discussion several of our group members had an idea to have closed contacts between the colleagues from neighbour countries like Finland, Sweden, Denmark, for better understanding the attitude towards some of TNCs, also to know more about the activities of TU in these countries.

Consider the reports of other countries, our study circle mentioned that to deal with TNCs first of all we have to influence our own government, to make equal conditions for the companies of your own country and TNCs in these countries.
The government can guarantee that TNCs do not damage local people and polute the enviroment. We disapprove the advantages for TNCs coming to open the branches in Estonia, neither our government.

Estonia is open for GC and in the process of privatisation there are the equal conditions and possibilities for local and international companies, also concerning to the work conditions, labour force and social problems,as well.
The requirements for companies, established by the government, are controled by the institutions of the state.

Our first task is to act in the concrete situation and to influence the government to conform the law or to influence the Parlament to legitimate the law, which don't allow TNCs to damage social and natural enviroment in certain region. Concerning to this matter the membres of our study circle made the conclusion that we have to follow the idea "TO THINK GLOBALLY AND TO ACT LOCALLY".

We have to get the information from other countries, to know the background of TNCs and to support each other through contacts between TU from different countries in all of three level: locally, nationally and internationally.
But we need to influence our own government to change the attitute towards TNCs if needed.

We are looking to continue our discussion and we are curious to know the opinion about GC of other study circles.

Our group decided to gather the information about "Coca-Cola".
