Dear friends,
During our two last sessions Estonian study circle had the topic of building a strategy - a programme of action against TNCs was taken up.
Members of our group discussed about the topic how to start campaigning against TNCs. The members had the opinion that we have to struggle with negative results of activities of TNCs in our country like social problems, enviromental problems, general working conditions, wages, trade union activities etc.
At the present TNC have not caused any of the above-mentioned problems in Estonia. In opposite, many of TNCs in Estonia have shown positive ways of solving these problems. For example, fuel enterprises have improved the environmental condition in the sale of fuel. Some TNCs have established the apartments, which deal workers who have social problems and very often they are more succesful then local trade unions. Also as we mentioned in the beginning of our study circle seminars, the working conditions and wages in TNCs are better then in Estonian enterprises.
Therefore our study circle decided that it is not necessary to make a programme of action against TNCs in Estonia.
At the same time we support gathering the information about the activities of TNCs in Estonian and all over the world, to make close contact to TU in same TNC in different countries, to know about solving the concrete case, to make the guidelines for social plan for negothiation with bosses of TNCs, to publish the problems in media.
The members of the group agreed to found the Work Councils in the TNCs, which will give direct information to workers about activities and strategy of TNC.
We have to strength the TU organisations and leadership for being the equal partner in negothiation with TNCs. Unfortunately the leaders of TU don't know about ILO Declaration and other documents, which could help to have more succesful negothiations.
