Summary of Session 1

Study Circle GBR1 (Peter Emery)


Study circles profiles England

At the moment there are 4 of us who have provided our profiles, in addition there are another 3 still to come. The reason for this is that there has been technical problems.

We are all living and working in Greater London, all part of Region 1 of the TGWU which covers London, East Anglia and The South East of England.

Ray Cattermole

I work for Herberts Paints who are a multi-national company working under the larger umbrella of Hoescht.

My site is based at Freshwater Road, Dagenham, Essex, RM8 1RU, England.

The product range made are Automotive, vehicle, Refinishing, Industrial Paints.

I have work for Herberts (or as it was originally know Berger Paints) for 17 years and presently hold down the job title of Team Leader in the main production plant.

As for Trade Union links, I have been Branch Secretary at the Dagenham plant since 1991 and also sit of the following committees: Paint Trades Advisory Committee. Chemical, Oil & Rubber Trade Group.

I have also recently been involved in recruitment & retention groups & along with my Works Convenor help set-up a European Works Council for Herberts.

I am also a member of the Labour Party.

As for personal interests I enjoy reading, crosswords & most sports.

I play cricket for a local club ( in Essex ) & am a keen golfer & I suppose I have one cross to bear it is I am a supporter of Manchester United.

Dave Elkins

I work at the Guinness Brewery in west London, as a technical operator in the processing department, where we are responsible for conditioning beer.

Guinness is a Irish organisation which one of the biggest transnational food & drinks companies in the world.

My trade union experience is that I have been a member of the TGWU for 19 years, shop steward and Health & Safety representatives for 14 years, I am currently convenor and chairperson of the Guinness Brewery Branch, I am also a member of the Guinness European Forum.

I am 35 married with children and a keen golfer and also interested in most sport especially football supporter.

The reason I am interested in this project is because we all must recognize the need to debate the issues and impact of transnational companies on an international level.

Ray Anjolaiyi

I work on a special contracts for the BBC, my role is as a chauffeur, I collect guests from all over the country to the studies of the BBC.

I am a Branch Secretary for the bar and restaurant workers. I am a member of the Regional Race Advisory Committee.

I am married with three children, I live in Yeading which is in the county of middlesex.

My hobbies are politics, reading (Novels)

Sport: I am a lover of tennis.

Bob Rigby

Mick Mills

I work for J Sainsbury's as a Lorry driver, I have worked for the company for 16 years and have been a member of the TGWU for 10 years, previously I worked in the warehouse I then transferred to the transport department.

Union activities:

  • Senior Shop Steward and Branch Secretary.
  • I have been married for 21 years and have 2 children.
  • I live in Buntingford Hertfordshire.
  • My hobbies include football, computers and drinking beer
