Summary of Session 4

Study Circle SWE1 (Ola Niclason)

This is the Swedish session number four.

We have been interested in a Swedish TNC called IKEA. "Ingvar Kamprad Elmtåsa Agunnaryd". Founded in 1950.

This company are involved in campaign against child labuor. A few years ago the main topic was carpets made by children in India and Pakistan. The Swedish TV made a program about the conditions at the factories and this campaign was successful and IKEA decided to stop the import of carpets and also started to investigate the conditions at the workplaces.

Nowadays they have set up a program with the Swedish LOTCO Foundation about child labour. Apperently can we affect this huge TNCs to be involved in the struggle against child labour and safety and health at factories in the manufactoring countries.

We haven't found any useful information about IKEA and their strategy and information about the company on Web site.

In Oslo the capital of Norway UN delegates from all the world are gathered in a convetion about child labour and to establish committy against child labour. Every day there is another 80.000 children who start to work in the world. Approximately 125 million children who work in the world.

We feel that problem with child labour is not a easy thing solve. But we have to start somewhere.

Best wishes from

Ola, Karl-Eric and Michael.
