Barbados
Hello to all my colleagues in the ISC, from sunny and sometimes wet Barbados. We had some difficulty getting our study circle off the ground. Problems included some staff turnover at the college, a clashing with some national events, and not being able to readily get participants from targeted sectors - Multinational Corporations.
Hovever, we started on April 29th. with six (6) eager participants.
These are:
(1) PATRICIA MILLAR (MRS), a merchandise control clerk with a national supermarket chain ("Supercentre"). Her hobbies are singing, craft, and some sports. She is also a member of the women's committee of the Barbados Workers' Union. As a participant, she hopes to gain a better understanding of GLOBALISATION, and its effects locally and internationally. She thinks that such would help her to relate to the various changes within the workplace.
(2) LIONEL BREWSTER(MR), a section leader in the maintenance management section of the Ministry of Public Works. His hobbies are table tennis and football. He thinks that his involvement in the ISC will further satisfy his interest in matters relating to Multinational corporations and Globalisation.
(3) PATRICK CADOGAN (MR), a line operator with McBride(Caribbean)Ltd. This company manufactures aerosols for household use. His interest in the programme is to get to know what is affecting workers in other countries, and also to understand their working environments with a view to making comparisons. His hobbies are cricket, football, horse racing, fishing and motor sports.
(4) ROSEMUND INGRID PUCKERN (MISS), a postal officer with the Barbados Postal Service. She feels that this programme will enable her to have a wider knowledge about TNC's and Globalisation, with emphasis on what TNC's are doind in other countries, and what strategies developing countries can adopt to deal with them. Her hobbies include reading, sports, meeting people, and dancing. She is a member of the Toastmasters, Barbados Cricket Association, Barbados Cancer Society, Youth Committee of the Barbados Workers Union, and the Barbados Jazz Society.
(5) FRANK HOLDER (MR), a welder at Oran Ltd., a national company which manufactures building materials, especially doors and windows. He thinks that his involvement will give him greater insights into the workings of TNC's and, a better understanding of Globalisation. His hobby is reading.
(6) DIANA FORDE (MISS), a reservation agent with LIAT(Leeward Islands Air Transport), a regional airline. She sees her involvement inthe ISC, as enabling her to get more knowledge on TNC's and Globalisation. She holds leadership positions in many national organisations.
GENERAL
The group will meet on Wednesdays, but in view of the late start will put in extra days on weekends. Members have no personal access to computers with the net, and will have to meet at the Union's headquarters or the Labour College.
We will try to get in all reports before the conclusion.
