Changes experienced in the work place, community and society Since the introduction of the express mail services (such as DHL Federal Express who have thier own transportation aeroplane)and the introduction of the fax services the post office has gone through some changes in order to be more competitive ,because where people would usually communicate by letter all these things have become a thing of the past with the introduction of the internet.

Wihtin our schools children have been introduced to information technology through a programme run be the Miinisty of Education called Edutech 2000 which will see computers in schools throughout the island by the year 2000.

Most Barbadians are already following the trend in order to become computer literate thereby allowing themselves to be a valuable asset on the job market.

The impact of globalisation on the supermarket industry has seen the importation of brand name products such as IGA,, Presidents Choice and Super C just to mention a few. These have been flooding the market and the main reason for this is the low cost .The ice cream industry has also been affected by the importation of products such as Blue Bunny and IGA .To survive the local companies have entered into a business arrangement where they market both local and foreign product as one.

The tourism sector has now witness the emergence of the ''hotel on sea'- cruise liners who can allow passengers to visit many ports in one package. This impacts negatively on long staying visitors in any one country thereby reducing the amount of foreign exchange earned .

EFFECTS OF GLOBALISATION

STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENT

Barbados entered into a structural adjustment arrangement wth the IMF and World Bank around l991-92. This programme saw the cutting of public workers salaries by 8%, cutting of public sector jobs, reduction of work time, divestment and privatisation.

During this time trade unions call for a greater say in decision making. This resulted in the coming together of the trade union movement into a national body now called CTUSAB and the setting up of a national tri-partite consultation body.
