Report: Session Five

Workers’ Rights and Democratic Control

Probably it would be interesting to know that we have a new member?!

This is: Mr. Toshko Minev Yordanov, electrical mechanic in the Enterprise "Stomana (Stain) - Pernik", Head of Labour for Automation of the Production Processes. He has be informed by his colleague Vasko about the excellent possibilities:

and has decided to join us. Welcome! Better later than never.

I. Are the Codes of conducts effective instruments to protect workers’ rights?

We have discussed the available reports (Belgium, France, Great Britain and Kenya) and find their commentsm thoughts and dreams similar to ours.

All participants have read before the meeting the disseminated materials and found them of extremly importance to be used in the all day trade union activities aiming recruitment of members and protection of workers’ rights on the base of the collective bargaining and ... now better known Codes of conduct - as theory, models, examples and hopefully - as practice in our country as well. We have discussed if they could be used in cases where the owner/investor is not ready to sign collective agreement, only as a first step. There were different opinions. For example:

2. Workers’ rights clauses in international agreements

We agreed fully with the ICFTU respond to the MAI. Probably there are additional arguments, approaches and tools which could be used, but to be able to write an artical on these issues we need a practice as well. You know, we are in the very beginning of developent market economy and facing the influence of TNCs. It is not so wrong, isn’t it? Now we are prepared how to act.

3. International collective bargaining to protect workers’ rights

It is an wonderful possibility and we would like, and are ready, to use it. It will need knowledge and power, but together is always easy.
