Nearly 50 representatives attended the 1998 Euro-WEA Annual Conference from Austria, Belgium, Britain, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Alana Dave, the ISC Co-ordinator, gave a detailed report on the project’s activities. She also described future plans, including a women workers’ programme, migrant workers course, the development of region-based ISCs, and programmes in partnership with our International Trade Secretariat affiliates.

Alana’s presentation stimulated a lively and productive discussion. In particular, the continuing issues of language and linguistic cultures in the operation of the ISCs were addressed. Delegates agreed that Euro-WEA and IFWEA should form a working group to look into this in far greater depth, possibly inviting people with specialist knowledge of cultural/linguistic mediation to help the process.

The other main discussion was Euro-WEA’s role in lobbying and advocating workers’ education in European institutions. Dave Spooner, General Secretary, introduced a discussion on Euro-WEA’s capacity in influencing longer-term education policy development, to ensure that the importance of workers’ education is recognised and reflected in the programmes of the European Commission. It was agreed that initially meetings must be arranged with the European Association for Adult Education to discuss common activity.
