The Association Club Mohamed Ali de la Culture Ouvrière (ACMACO), a recent IFWEA affiliate, held the fifth session of its annual international summer school in Gammarth from July 16 to 19 on the theme: social pacts in the euro-mediterranean region. Trade unionists and academics from different countries analysed and discussed social agreements, either between the social counterparts or between these and the state, with their strong points and their weaknesses, with the objective of developing standards of evaluation from a trade union point of view. Different types of agreements, ranging from enterprise agreements to joint or tripartite agreements at national level on issues such as employment, economic and wage policy or immigration, were discussed.

This year’s summer school was supported by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, and the French and Spanish international co-operation agencies. Participants included trade unionists, economists, sociologists and researchers from Tunisia, Algeria, Belgium, France, Italy and Spain. IFWEA was represented by its president Dan Gallin.

The ACMACO is an independent NGO, established in 1992, to conduct research and education in the fields of labour/management relations and trade union development.

The Association publishes material in Arabic and French. It is named after Mohamed Ali, the leader of the first Tunisian trade union centre, the CGTT, founded in 1924. The CGTT affiliated to the Red International of Labour Unions (RILU) and was suppressed in 1925 by the French colonial authorities after conducting several strikes, with most of its leaders jailed for "conspiracy". Mohamed Ali died in 1928. DG
