TSL conference - ADULT LEARNING AS A GLOBAL CHALLENGE

Sahra Ryklief The Workers’ Education Association of Finland (TSL) celebrated its 90th anniversary at Workers’ House in Helsinki on 1st September 2009. The TSL has 32 affiliated organisations in Finland, and 10 regional offices all around Finland. They provide short courses; study circles and network studying; seminars; advice offices and cultural activities. The conference was opened by the chairperson of the TSL, Pia Viitanen, and the President of the Republic of Finland, Tarja Halonen, provided the keynote address. IFWEA General Secretary, Sahra Ryklief presented a discussion paper on Adult Learning as a Global Challenge.

Implications of economic globalization on labor market policies: Comparative study of the Philippines and Indonesia

Abstract: The paper interrogates the implications of economic globalization on the labor markets in the Philippines and Indonesia. Today’s economic globalization characterized by liberalization of the market, privatization of state-owned enterprises, and minimal government intervention in the economy, results in job losses, retrenchments and irregular employment and rising wage differentials among workers.

First winners of the Olive Cordell Awards

The first winners of the new Olive Cordell annual awards scheme, for learners and tutors of WEA Skills for Life courses, were said to be delighted as they received a certificate and a prize of £200 each. Skills for Life Learner of the Year, Razuiai Bibi, and Tutor of the Year Sarah Edwards, were chosen amongst nominees from all over the country to take home the top prizes, at a presentation ceremony in Birmingham.

Statement presented by Ms Pat Horn, International Co-ordinator, StreetNet International

Please find the statement presented by Ms Pat Horn, International Co-ordinator, StreetNet International on behalf of WIEGO (Women in Informal Employment: Globalising and Organising) at the Plenary of the 98th ILO Conference in Geneva (June 2009).

The statement urges governments to bring their local government authorities into their economic recovery plans as a matter of urgency. It calls for local governments inter alia to engage in extensive and effective social dialogue with the objective of being fully accountable to their civil society constituents.

Latest about Niaz Khan's and Interwood trade union leader's arrests

This evening two Bailiffs on orders of Lahore High Court were issued for recovery of the arrested trade union leaders; Niaz Khan, general sectary, Ittehad Labour Union Carpet Industries Pakistan and leader of National Trade Union Federation and Kurram Shehzad and Abdul Qadir of the Interwood Furniture Company.

Please Protest: Interwood Furniture Company's brutal actions against trade union

Today, 23rd May, few of the Interwood Furniture Company workers who are sacked from job due to unionisation were gathering at some distance from the factory for going to the labour department in Lahore. Suddenly a heavy contingent from Shalamar police station arrived and started baton charging the workers and arrested four of them.
